Day out at Tilgate Park & Forest in W. Sussex
Crawley a centre of iron-working in Roman times lies in the Weald between the North and South Downs and developed slowly as a market town from the 13th century. In 1822 Gideon Mantell, an amateur fossil collector and palaeontologist, discovered teeth, bones and other remains of what he described as "an animal of the lizard tribe of enormous magnitude", in Tilgate Forest. Tilgate Park, although mostly associated with the area surrounding Tilgate Lake has a large amount of woodland. There is also a Local Nature Reserve called Tilgate Nature Centre for protected and endangered species.
There are three large lakes in the park. The biggest lake, used to be called "Campbell's Lake" named after the former world water speed record holder Sir Donald Campbell, who used to keep his boat there.
Tilgate Nature centre was formed in 1966 to breed ducklings for introduction into the three lakes at Tilgate. Its focus changed over the years and it now houses an impressive animal collection including reindeer, owls, raccoon dogs, coati, parrots, mongooses, otters, wallabies, emus, snakes, tarantulas, lizards and various invertebrates. Tilgate Nature Centre is actively involved in breeding programmes for threatened species and has also been involved in re-introduction programmes.
We meet at midday at the Smith and Western Pub and then go nearby where we plan to enjoy a picnic before a walk around the lakes. We may visit the Nature Centre before taking a trek into Tilgate Forest.
At 5pm we plan to eat together at the Smith and Western Pub in the Park.
